Torres Almeida extends winning streak to six in victory
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis swept Butler Saturday evening in a 7-0 decision, securing its fourth win in the last five matches. Sophomore Pablo Torres Almeida picked up his sixth-straight victory in singles, pushing his record to 9-2 on the season.
"Sweeps always feel good, especially against Butler," said head coach Matt Brothers. "I think some of the guys could've played better games, but I'm extremely happy with the win. Sometimes those matches where you're not at your best are the ones where you learn the most. Props to the guys for their effort today, both in doubles and singles," said Brothers. "We had a solid week of practice, and it paid off exactly as we hoped. Looking ahead, I'm hoping we can keep the same level of competitiveness heading into our last match against Xavier and the BIG EAST Tournament."
The remarkable victory moved DePaul to 10-9 overall, 4-2 at home, and 3-1 against BIG EAST opponents.
To begin doubles, Laurentiu Mandocescu and Matteo Iaquinto dominated Rahulnik Konakanchi/Nicholas Shirley of Butler (8-15) at No. 3, 6-3.
Leon Huck and Sven Moser picked up another victory at the No. 2 spot, cruising to a 6-2 win and taking their fifth match in the last six appearances in doubles.
The Blue Demons maintained their scoring momentum, securing five first-set singles victories. Shourya Verma and Mandocescu dominated their opponents at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively, in 6-3, 6-3, straight-set victories.
At No. 3, Iaquinto knocked off Nicolas Arts in a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 decision, clinching the match victory for DePaul.
Huck bested Butler's Borja Miralles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, in a come-from-behind win at the No. 1 position.
In a double-tiebreaker showdown at No. 6, Moser emerged victorious over Nicholas Balthazor, 7-6(5), 7-6(3), pushing DePaul's total to 6.
To cap off the evening, Torres Almeida clinched a hard-fought victory against Konakanchi in a thrilling 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(9) battle. Despite trailing 2-5 in the third set, Torres Almeida staged an incredible comeback, sealing the Blue Demon sweep of Butler.
