Katelynn Oxley adds match-best six blocks in defeat
CHICAGO – DePaul volleyball fell to Xavier in three sets (25-22, 29-27, 25-19) inside McGrath-Phillips Arena Saturday evening, dropping to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in BIG EAST play. Xavier improves to 18-2 on the year, including 7-1 in league matches.
Isabela Tavares Salomon played a significant offensive role for the Blue Demons, notching 11 kills at a .348 clip, along with five blocks. Fellow freshman Morgan Stewart also contributed 11 kills to match the team-best.
Setter Amanda Saeger tallied her third double-double of the season, facilitating the DePaul side with 35 assists and ten digs. Abby Cahill started her first match this season at libero, registering a team-best 11 digs, while senior Katelynn Oxley posted a match-best six blocks.
"Xavier is a great example of a team that works together and shows strong commitment to building points," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We played to a higher standard today, but we still need to push for more in how we perform as a team. Our focus this week will be on improving training consistency, so that our performance in competition becomes more reliable."
Xavier was paced by a match-best 12 kills from Anna Taylor.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE
The sides were neck and neck with Jade Dudley-Epps, Stewart and Kendall Timme adding two kills each in the first half of the set. A late 4-0 run from the Musketeers, led by three kills from Emma Grace, pushed them in front. Xavier held on until the end, taking the opening set, 25-22.
SET TWO
Down as many as six after three Xavier kills from Charlotte Moriarty, the Blue Demons went on a pair of 5-0 scoring runs, fueled by a trio of kills from Stewart. Into extra points, another Moriarty kill and ace from Julia Grace narrowly won Xavier the second frame. 29-27.
SET THREE
Xavier jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead behind two DePaul errors and another Moriarty kill. A pair of service aces and a kill from Stewart allowed the Blue Demons to knot the frame at seven points apiece. Despite a pair of kills from Tavares-Salomon, a 4-0 scoring run for the Musketeers, including two kills from McKinley Boehm, gave Xavier a lead they did not relinquish the rest of the way. The Musketeers earned the final set by a score of 25-19.
