DePaul Downs Milwaukee 77-73 in Exhibition Matchup

Five Blue Demons score in double figures
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball concluded its preseason slate with a 77-73 exhibition victory over Milwaukee on Saturday evening at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Offensively, DePaul's scoring was balanced across the lineup with five players scoring in double figures. Alayna West led the way with 14 points, showing her ability to score inside and at the line, in addition to team-highs in assists (8), rebounds (6) and steals (4). Aizhanique Mayo connected on four of six attempts from beyond the arc while graduate forward Michelle Ojo provided a spark in limited minutes, scoring 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Junior guard Shakara McCline filled the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals.
The Blue Demons defensive pressure turned 19 Panther turnovers into 32 points.
As a team, the Blue Demons were at their best when they pushed pace and attacked the paint, outscoring Milwaukee 46-26 inside. They also dominated the offensive glass and turned in chances into 16 second-chance points.
Micayla Silas scored a game-high 14 points for the Panthers.
How It Happened
Ojo scored four of DePaul's first seven points while Mayo connected on the team's first three-pointer. The Blue Demons held Milwaukee scoreless for the first 7:12 of the contest, forcing eight turnovers in that span. Graduate transfer Justis Odom made an immediate impact off the bench with four-straight points to push the lead to 14-0. DePaul controlled the offensive glass in the opening stanza, outrebounding the Panthers 6-3. After a brief 7-2 Milwaukee run, Mayo knocked down her second triple before the buzzer to give DePaul a 22-9 advantage after one.
West opened the second-quarter scoring before foul trouble slowed the Blue Demons. Milwaukee responded with a 16-2 run over five minutes to cut the deficit to one at 26-25. DePaul regrouped with back-to-back three-point plays including Mayo's third triple followed by a McCline and-one to rebuild a 34-29 lead. The Panthers, shooting 71 percent from deep in the period, surged ahead late to take a 40-35 lead into halftime.
After sitting much of the first half with foul trouble, Ojo sparked the Blue Demons start to the second half with four quick points. Ally Timm's floater capped a 6-0 DePaul run to reclaim the lead before Milwaukee answered with a run of its own. A Nelson jumper and another Mayo three tied the game at 46-46. In the closing moments of the quarter, West scored inside and McCline followed with a steal-and-score to bring the game even at 53-53 entering the fourth.
A Novik putback and McCline three handed DePaul a 67-58 lead with 3:38 remaining. Milwaukee responded with back-to-back triples to pull within three, but West went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal a 77-73 Blue Demons victory.
