Sophomore goalkeeper makes senior national team debut
CHICAGO – For the first time in her career, DePaul women's soccer goalkeeper Maddie Iro has earned a call-up to the New Zealand women's national football team, representing her home country of New Zealand. The Christchurch native joins the Football Ferns, who currently hold a FIFA world ranking of 33.
Iro will join the squad for a pair of international friendlies beginning Sunday, Oct. 26, when New Zealand faces Mexico at 6 p.m. CT at Estadio Olímpico Benito Juárez in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.
She and the Football Ferns will then travel to the United States to meet the U.S. Women's National Team on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., home of the NWSL's Kansas City Current. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT.
Before earning her first senior-team selection, Iro built an impressive résumé through New Zealand's youth system. She was a Youth National League Champion in 2022 and 2023 with Canterbury United Pride Youth, while also competing for the Cashmere Technical FC Women's First Team from 2020 to 2024.
On the international stage, she represented New Zealand at both the U17 and U20 levels. At the 2022 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in India, she was selected after attending all five national-team preparation camps. Two years later, she advanced to the 2024 U20 Women's World Cup in Colombia, where she played every minute across three group-stage matches.
