Sophomores Abdullahi, Wyller lead DePaul with personal bests
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – DePaul cross country's second-consecutive trip to South Bend, Ind. concluded Friday afternoon with a 9th-place finish in the women's 5k and 14th place finish in the men's 8k in the gold division at the Joe Piane Invitational.
The women's 5k started the day for the Blue Demons at 10:50 a.m. CT, consisting of two winding loops around the Burke Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The men's 8k followed at 11:30 a.m. CT, covering three loops around the same course.
"The women had a great race. Vivian went under 18 for the first time, Kalina had a PR, and Sara stepped up and performed when the team needed her," said head coach Geoff Wayton. "Even without Tessa, who is normally our number one, the team rose to the occasion. I was really impressed, everyone stepped up and did a great job; they looked hardship in the eyes and really ran well."
Vivian Wyller shined in the women's 5k, leading the Blue Demons with a 15th-place finish and a personal best of 17:51.1. The junior duo of Kalina Urbaniak and Gianna Sanchez followed, setting PR's and timing in at 18:18.8 and 18:33.7, respectively.
Rounding out DePaul's top five, Isabella Orozco placed 82nd with a time of 19:01.9, Sara Cordova placed 103rd, while also recording another personal best for DePaul with a time of 19:19.5.
Of 22 competing schools and 171 runners, the women's team placed ninth in the gold division.
"Mohamed performed exceptionally and earned a big PR. That was really fun to watch," said Wayton. "Cole and Danny also recorded big PRs; they're just young, but improving. We're basically all freshmen on the men's side, but the progress is showing. I know we can be a different team in a month."
A recent winner of the BIG EAST XC Athlete of the Week award, Mohamed Abdullahi followed it up with a stellar, top-five performance in the men's 8k Friday. Abdullahi recorded another personal best, shaving almost 20 seconds off of his previous time, earning 4th place with a time of 24:27.3. Freshman Cole Tupper followed with a 50th-place finish, snatching a season best of 25:25.2.
Distance-extraordinaire Mason Krieg finished shortly after, running a time of 25:26.3, while freshmen Daniel Grauer and Kyle Friedl rounded out the Blue Demon top-five with 26:11.3 and 27:18.0 times, respectively. Competing alongside 178 runners and 21 schools, men's cross country placed 14th Friday afternoon.
Overall, Wayton's team showed improvement across the board with five women's and six men's runners record personal best times in their respective races.
