Four Blue Demons finish in double figures
PEORIA, Ill. – Despite four starters finishing in double figures, DePaul women's basketball couldn't overcome a cold shooting night, dropping a 78-64 decision to Bradley on the road Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Natiah Nelson led DePaul in scoring, reaching double figures for the third straight game with 15 points, five rebounds and a game-high four steals. Junior forward Kate Novik recorded the fourth double-double of her career and first of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks.
Redshirt freshman Alayna West added a career-high 11 points, seven rebounds and a career-best five assists, while graduate forward Michelle Ojo rounded out DePaul's double-figure scorers with a season-high 10 points on 50-percent shooting from the field.
The Blue Demons outscored the Braves 44-32 in the paint and held a 15-10 edge in fast-break points, but shot a season-low 36 percent from the field and 16 percent from long range.
Kaylen Nelson led Bradley with 28 points.
How It Happened
Back-to-back buckets from Ojo on the offensive glass pushed DePaul out to a 7-2 lead before Bradley responded with 14 unanswered points to take a 16-7 advantage with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter. The Blue Demons closed the period strong, outscoring the Braves 7-2 in the final minute, capped by a Novik finish at the rim, to cut the deficit to 21-17 after one.
DePaul's defensive pressure forced an early Bradley timeout as the visitors evened the score at 24. A midrange jumper from West ended a brief Blue Demon scoring drought and brought DePaul back within a possession with two minutes left in the first half. Bradley carried a 38-30 lead into the locker room, with Novik pacing DePaul with 10 points.
Both teams struggled from the field for much of the third quarter before Aizhanique Mayo's free throws brought DePaul within seven. Bradley's Nelson then caught fire, knocking down three-consecutive triples to stretch the margin to 58-44 heading into the fourth.
A midrange jumper from Ally Timm at the 5:16 mark in the fourth quarter trimmed Bradley's lead to nine, 63-54, but that was as close as DePaul would get as the Braves went 11-for-13 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the win.
