Strong Second Half Lifts DePaul Past Detroit Mercy

Five Blue Demons notch double-digit scoring
CHICAGO – DePaul men's basketball eclipsed the 90-point mark for its second-straight outing, defeating Detroit Mercy, 95-75, Sunday night at Wintrust Arena. Five Blue Demons reached double figures for the first time this season, led by Layden Blocker's 18 points and CJ Gunn's 17. All 17 of Gunn's points came in the second half, where he went 4-of-5 from three. NJ Benson, Brandon Maclin and RJ Smith rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 apiece.
The Blue Demons continued their emphasis on sharing the ball with 23 assists on 30 made field goals for an assist rate of 73.3 percent. Smith led the way with a career-high seven assists while Blocker had his fifth game of the season with four or more.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After taking some time to find their offensive rhythm, DePaul (4-2) grabbed a 21-19 lead behind a three-pointer from Smith. The Blue Demons closed the half by hitting four of their final five field goal attempts to take a 37-29 advantage into the break.
The second half told a different story as DePaul opened with a 17-4 run to stretch its lead to 54-36. Kaleb Banks knocked down back-to-back threes to push the margin to 20 – a deficit the Titans couldn't touch the rest of the way. The Blue Demons shot a blistering 60.6 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from three-point range in the second half.

- DePaul made a season-high 14 three-pointers as seven different players knocked down at least one.
- The Blue Demons scored 58 points in the second half, their most in a half since March 2, 2022, against Marquette.
- Smith's seven assists marked the most by a Blue Demon in a single game this season.
