New Zealand product brings U17/U20 World Cup experience to Lincoln Park
CHICAGO – Freshman transfer Maddie Iro of Christchurch, New Zealand, is set to begin spring ball with DePaul women's soccer, having joined the Blue Demons in January from High Point University. The Christchurch native has built an impressive resume, featuring international experience and collegiate starts early in her career.
"It's been great to have Maddie join us," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "She's a powerful goalkeeper with a ton of potential, playing at a high level for her national team in New Zealand. We are being patient and giving her time to settle in after making the move to Chicago—a brave decision that speaks to her character. I've seen so much progress over the last couple of weeks, and I know she will make valuable contributions to our team."
Iro made her collegiate debut with High Point in 2024, starting two matches against Liberty (Aug. 15) and Clemson (Aug. 18). Across those games, she recorded 10 total saves, including five in each match, while logging 180 minutes in goal.
Before college soccer, Iro represented New Zealand on the international stage, competing with the U17 and U20 national teams. She played in the 2022 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup in India and was part of the 2024 U20 Women's World Cup squad in Colombia.
At the club level, she played for Cashmere Technical FC Women's First Team from 2020 to 2024 and was a key member of the Canterbury United Pride Youth squad from 2019 to 2023, helping her team secure Youth National League championships in 2022 and 2023.
A multi-sport athlete, Iro earned varsity letters in cricket, tennis, and badminton while attending Christchurch Girls' High School. She competed in cricket from 2019 to 2021, winning a National Cricket Championship in 2020.
Iro plans to major in sports communication at DePaul. She is a 2023 graduate of Christchurch Girls' High School and has been recognized for her dedication both on the field and in the classroom.
