Men’s tennis secures three-straight victories for second time this season
CHICAGO – No. 61 DePaul men's tennis put together its most complete weekend of the season, sweeping three straight matches at XS Tennis Village to close out the George Lott Classic unbeaten. The Blue Demons took down Belmont and Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, adding two more solid wins to their résumé against tough mid-major competition.
DePaul (7-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened the day against Belmont (4-6) with a commanding 7-0 victory, fueled by dominant singles performances from Andy Hadziabdic, Thomas Giles, and Quang Vinh Nguyen. Later that evening, the Blue Demons wrapped up the weekend by sweeping Eastern Kentucky (5-11) 4-0, with Hadziabdic and Sven Moser clinching the final two singles points.
The Blue Demons picked up where they left off Friday after taking down Northern Illinois, carrying that momentum into doubles play against Belmont. At No. 2 doubles, Giles and Pablo Torres Almeida were the first to finish, defeating Ndumbe and Robin 6-1 to put DePaul in control early. At No. 1, Matteo Iaquinto and Marko Milosavljevic matched that scoreline with a 6-1 win over Roi and Vedovelli, securing the doubles point and sending the Blue Demons into singles play with momentum.
Hadziabdic wasted little time at No. 4, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Vinh Nguyen was just as efficient at No. 6, shutting out his opponent 6-0, 6-0 for DePaul's third point. At No. 5, Giles fought off a second-set tiebreaker to claim a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win. Iaquinto followed at No. 1, recording a 6-3, 6-4 victory to keep DePaul in firm control. The final two matches stretched into third-set tiebreakers, with Milosavljevic and Torres Almeida both battling through to complete the sweep.
Looking to close out an unbeaten weekend, DePaul jumped ahead early against Eastern Kentucky, which was forced to forfeit a doubles match and a singles match due to roster limitations. At No. 2 doubles, Giles and Moser quickly handled their opponents 6-1 to clinch the doubles point alongside the default at No. 3.
A forfeit at No. 6 singles extended DePaul's lead, leaving the Blue Demons needing just two more wins to secure the match. Hadziabdic completed his undefeated weekend at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-3 win, while Moser delivered the match point at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory to lock in the 4-0 sweep.
