No. 72 DePaul drops first match in five outings
CLEVELAND, Ohio – After dropping the first two points of the afternoon, No. 72 DePaul men's tennis could not muster enough momentum to counter Buffalo in a narrow 4-3 setback on Saturday afternoon. The loss for the Blue Demons (8-6, 1-0 BIG EAST) marks their first defeat in the last five matches, with one more road trip ahead before conference play resumes.
Buffalo (6-4) opened the match with a win at No. 3 doubles before Matteo Iaquinto and Marko Milosavljevic evened the battle with a 6-4 victory at No. 2. However, the Bulls claimed the early advantage as DePaul's top duo, Thomas Giles and Pablo Torres Almeida, fell 6-4 on the No. 1 court, conceding the doubles point.
The Bulls carried that momentum into singles, quickly securing a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 to take a two-point lead. Giles responded at No. 5, delivering a steady 6-3, 6-3 win to put DePaul on the board.
Buffalo pushed ahead once more, earning a win at No. 6 to go up 3-1 before Iaquinto battled through a tight first set to post a commanding 7-6(5), 6-0 victory at No. 1. Buffalo ultimately sealed the result at No. 3 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Milosavljevic.
With the match already decided, freshman Andy Hadziabdic closed out the competition on a high note, prevailing in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, as DePaul ended the day with a 4-3 final score. The Bulls secured their fourth straight win and defeated a ranked opponent for the first time since 2019.
