Blue Demons secure third sweep in four home matches
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis secured its third home sweep in just four matches this season, taking down Georgetown (4-8) in a 7-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at XS Tennis Village. Senior Matteo Iaquinto led the way for the Blue Demons, defeating No. 110-ranked singles player and reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Jake Fellows in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
In a match lasting roughly three hours and fifteen minutes, the Blue Demons (10-8, 2-1 BIG EAST) came through at nearly every crucial moment, rallying from behind in doubles and overcoming stiff singles competition.
The Hoyas opened doubles play with an early advantage, quickly taking the No. 1 court with a 6-1 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Thomas Giles and Jona Gitschel found themselves trailing 4-3 and just two games away from conceding the doubles point. However, Giles and Gitschel rallied to win four of the final five games to secure a 7-5 victory.
The most impressive comeback of the afternoon came at No. 3 doubles, where newcomers Tobias Leitner and Quang Vinh Nguyen fell behind 4-0 before staging a remarkable turnaround to level the match at 5-5. Leitner and Vinh Nguyen then completed the comeback by defeating Georgetown's duo of Pablo/Williams in a tiebreaker, 7-6(5), fully shifting the momentum. DePaul entered singles play ahead 1-0.
In singles, Iaquinto provided the highlight by claiming the program's first ranked singles victory since the 2022 season, when three-time BIG EAST Champion and back-to-back BIG EAST Player of the Year Vito Tonejc took down two ranked opponents during his senior campaign.
Pablo Torres Almeida delivered a memorable singles match at No. 3, winning the longest tiebreaker of the season, 6-2, 7-6(12), to clinch DePaul's overall match victory.
At No. 6 singles, Vinh Nguyen secured another court in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-2, further solidifying DePaul's dominance.
