DePaul Earns Overtime Victory Against St. John’s on Jorie Allen Day

Jorie Allen finishes with 17 points in her final game at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – DePaul women's basketball closed out the regular season with a gutsy 65-64 overtime victory over St. John's on Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena. In a game that had 15 ties and 11 lead changes, the Blue Demons never wavered and put themselves in a position to win by going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the extra period.
On her senior day, Jorie Allen finished with 17 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter, to lead DePaul. Allen posted 10 or more points in all 31 regular season games.
Junior guard Kate Clarke totaled 15 points, her sixth game in double figures this season, in addition to five assists which ties her career high. Taylor Johnson-Matthews added 12 points including the game winning free throws in the overtime period.
Ber'Nyah Mayo had a game-high 27 points for St. John's while Phoenix Gedeon posted 11 points and nine rebounds.
How It Happened
St. John's hit three of their first five attempts from distance to take an early 11-2 lead. The Blue Demons held the Red Storm without a point for the last four and half minutes of the quarter to pull within a possession, trailing 13-10 after a period.
A runner from Natiah Nelson in the lane tied the game at 14 with 6:26 remaining in the second quarter. DePaul used a 6-0 run capped by a Clarke three to take its largest lead of the half 20-16. The Johnnies pulled with a point on a three-point play before a triple from Ohiaeri ballooned the Blue Demons to six, 25-19. A St. John's three as time expired trimmed DePaul's lead to 27-24 at the half.
Five points from Clarke in a 30-second span erased a one-point deficit for DePaul to take a two-possession advantage halfway through the third quarter. The two sides combined for just nine field goals in the stanza with the Blue Demons claiming a 42-40 advantage with 10 minutes left.
St. John's scored the first five points of the final period to jump back in front, 45-42, with eight minutes left in regulation. Both sides struggled to find any offensive rhythm with the score knotted at 46 for nearly three minutes. Allen broke the drought and scored 10-straight points for the Blue Demons to put DePaul ahead 54-49 and force a St. John's timeout with under a minute left in the game. The Red Storm came within two on a successful and-one before Allen found Newman underneath to stretch the lead back to four. The Johnnies tied the game on an offensive putback and free throw to send the game to overtime.

Newman slipped to the basket for a layup to put DePaul on top 63-62 with nine seconds remaining.
