Sechi tallies lone point in loss
CINCINNATI – DePaul women's tennis fell against Xavier 1-6 Saturday afternoon at the Jim and Mary Brockhoff Family Tennis Facility in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Doubles play began with the Musketeers quickly capturing court three, 6-1. The No. 37-ranked Xavier duo of Abby Nugent and Clara Owen faced No. 54 Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith in slot one. Nugent and Owen utilized an early lead, besting DePaul's top doubles pair 6-2. Nobbs and Sechi battled on court two, resulting in an unfinished match. Goncharov and Smith tallied a loss for the first time since Feb. 1 at George Washington, winning 10 straight matches.
Four Blue Demons took their matches to a tiebraking set in singles competition. After Xavier secured court four, Hannah Smith won the first set on court one, 6-1, but fell in the following two sets. Sasha Stula forced a third set on court two following a 6-2 win in the second set. The sophomore challenged the Musketeers' Nugent but ultimately lost the decisive third set, 2-6. No. 5 singles Isabella Gibson dropped the opening set 0-6 before forcing a tiebreaker in set two. Gibson narrowly dropped the tiebreaker with a 5-7 decision. Goncharov won her first set 6-2 before falling 3-6, 4-6. Sophomore Roberta Sechi secured the lone point for the Scarlet and Blue with a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory to close out the match.
