Blue Demons bow out of BIG EAST Championships
CAYCE, S.C. – DePaul women's tennis lost a tight, 4-3 match to Villanova in the quarterfinal round of the BIG EAST Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon. The defeat ends the Blue Demons' 2025 dual season.
First serve began at 11:45 a.m. CT from the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center. DePaul jumped out to a quick start with Roberta Sechi and Eleanor Nobbs winning 6-0 on doubles court two. The No. 3 tandem of Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula followed with the same dominance in their 6-0 showing to secure the doubles point for the Scarlet and Blue. Eva Goncharov and Hannah Smith led 5-2 on court one when the match went unfinished.
The Wildcats regained their footing in singles action with a 6-2, 6-4 victory on court six before grabbing slot one, 6-2, 7-5 to take a 2-1 lead.
Eleanor Nobbs evened the match with a 7-6 (6), 6-0 win in the fourth slot. The senior battled in a back and forth first set, claiming an early advantage. Nobbs used her experience to wear down her opponent in set two for a straight-set triumph.
Goncharov led 6-1 after the first frame on court three, but the Wildcats' Maggie Gehrig countered with a 6-2, 6-4 win, putting Villanova ahead once again.
Stula registered a dominant 6-0 performance in slot two after the first set. Falling 4-6 in set two, Stula forced a decisive third-set tiebreaker with the season on the line. The sophomore remained steady and controlled the match to a 6-4 victory. The Blue Demons knotted the match at three with one court remaining.
Court five featured a stalemate between Isabella Gibson and Villanova's Jenna Stevens through the first two sets. Stevens tallied a 7-5 advantage following the first frame. Gibson answered, pulling even with a 6-2 triumph in set two, setting up a third-set to determine the match and the season. Stevens outlasted Gibson, with a 6-2 decision, clinching the contest for the Wildcats.
