DePaul Falls to Illinois State on Opening Day

Morgan Stewart earns 11 kills in debut
Kalamazoo, Mich. – DePaul volleyball began its 2025 campaign with a loss to Illinois State 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-15) on Friday afternoon.
Outside hitter Morgan Stewart paced the Blue Demon offense, earning 11 kills in her DePaul debut, along with seven digs. Fellow freshman Eva Hurrle earned the nod at libero, leading the team with nine digs.
All three middle blockers also made their way into the starting lineup, with Jade Dudley-Epps recording a team-best five blocks on the day. Senior Katelynn Oxley followed behind Stewart with eight kills, eclipsing this mark just twice in all of 2024.
"This match offered so much more development than the score showed," said head coach Marie Zidek.
"We battled with a stronger game this week and continue to build the game we want to play very quickly. What the next batch of growth is for this group is taking care of the responsibility when it is their turn to make the on-ball play. We are too high in attack errors right now to sustain the game we are trying to play. If we can have more players take responsibility and bet on themselves while remaining grounded in our team systems, we will make great improvements in set play and the win/loss column. We are excited for the next opportunity against Oakland tomorrow. This team is battling hard and showing an exciting game, now we just have to grow in the maturity of holding game responsibility across the board."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
SET ONE:
The two sides swapped points early, with neither accumulating more than a two-point lead until the Redbirds took a 12-8 advantage on three DePaul errors. The Blue Demons battled back with kills from Dudley-Epps, Oxley and an ace from Hurrle, but Illinois State charged forward again, leading by as many as seven late. DePaul fought off three set points, but an Aida Shadewald kill secured the opening set for the Redbirds.
SET TWO:
DePaul returned strong for the second frame, earning two quick kills to set the tone. Four kills from Stewart put the Blue Demons ahead by as many as six, but two 4-0 scoring runs from Illinois State, including three kills from Hannah Reichensperger, knotted the set at 15 points apiece. Neither side gained more than a two-point advantage the rest of the way, with the Redbirds narrowly taking the set, 25-23.
SET THREE:
Equal at three points after a service ace from Oxley, the Redbirds went on a 5-0 scoring run, propelled by two kills from Khenedi Guest. A pair of kills each from Oxley and Stewart, along with a block from Martina Diana and Dudley-Epps brought the Blue Demons within two in the middle of the set, but it was another late pair of runs from the Redbirds that earned them the final set of the match.
