Blue Demons collect two top-four team finishes at Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – DePaul cross country wrapped up its trip to South Bend, Ind. with a fourth-place finish in the men's 8k and a third-place finish in the women's 5k races Friday afternoon.
"We've got a very young group of really good young men, and they gained valuable experience today running their first 8,000 meters," said head coach Geoff Wayton. "Our top four ran really well. Mohamed ran great in very hot conditions and posted a huge PR by over a minute. Mason and Kyle raced hard, and Cole Tupper, as a freshman, ran really aggressively. I'm proud of him. Daniel Grauer showed toughness as a freshman, holding strong in a challenging spot. He did a great job."
The men's 8k got underway at 2:30 p.m. CT, consisting of three winding loops around the Burke Golf Course. The women's 5k began at 3:15 p.m. CT, covering two loops around the same course during their race.
In the men's race, Mohamed Abdullahi headlined DePaul as he concluded with a 14th-place finish and a personal best, shaving his previous record by more than a minute after he finished in 24:46.4. Placing 21st, Kyle Clark finished shortly after with a personal best with a time of 25:16.8, shaving close to four seconds off his previous mark.
Mason Krieg and Cole Tupper finished just 30 seconds off each other, running 25:17.2 and 25:47.3 times and placing 22nd and 32nd respectively. Freshman Daniel Grauer rounded off DePaul's top five with a 26:46.4 time and a 58th place finish.
"On the women's side, Tessa and Vivian ran excellent races, and I was really proud of our top four," said Wayton. "Kalina and Isabella also ran well, and Gianna ran the best race of her career for the second meet in a row. Our top five all recorded personal bests, and the women finishing third is a big deal. That's a great step in the right direction. We'll be back on this same course in a few weeks, and I'm excited for the women to have another chance to run even faster."
On the women's side, all of DePaul's top five finishers recorded personal bests in the women's 5k. Tessa Roe continued to improve as she placed 14th with a personal best time of 17:38.0 in the women's 5k. Vivian Wyller and Karina Urbaniak follow closely behind as they finish with personal best times of 18:00.6 and 18:28.0 respectively.
Capping off DePaul's top five, Isabella Orozco and Gianna Sanchez also boasted career bests with finishes in 18:40.1 and 18:52.8 respectively, finalizing a 3rd place team effort.
Women's cross country showed impressive improvement both individually and as a team, as they boosted their previous fifth place performance in the 2024 National Catholic Championships to a third-place finish, Friday afternoon.
