Blue Demons drop tight road decision Friday evening

RICHMOND, Va. – DePaul men's tennis came up just short Friday evening at the Thalhimer Tennis Center, falling 4-3 in a tightly contested road dual to VCU. The Blue Demons battled back in singles after dropping the doubles point but were unable to flip the overall result.

DePaul was unable to secure the doubles point to open the match. Alejandro Gandini and Pablo Torres Almeida fell 6-3 at No. 1, while Sebastian Medica and Augusto Pardo Cano dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 2. The third doubles court between Thomas Giles and Sven Moser and Kostiantyn Mantach and Leon Zaorski was halted with the score tied at 5-5.

Singles play opened at the No. 2 position, where VCU earned a straight-set victory. The Blue Demons responded at No. 4 as Pablo Torres Almeida posted a 6-3, 6-4 win to put DePaul on the board. Alejandro Gandini followed with a three-set victory at No. 1, battling through a second-set tiebreak before closing out the match.

The Rams added wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions to clinch the dual. DePaul closed the bout with a win at No. 6, where Augusto Pardo Cano earned a three-set decision to add the final point after the outcome had already been decided.
