Blue Demons cap non-conference with dominant win at Wish Field
Eleven different Blue Demons recorded a point. Mason Kutch and Luca Iaccino each finished with a goal and an assist, while Quinn Bedwell and Kai Jorgenson each set up two goals. Liam Mullins, Christian Dionne and Sam Tinoco also scored, with Dionne and Tinoco netting their first goals in a Blue Demon uniform.
In goal, Chance Johnson faced just two shots on target and made one save, improving to 3-2-3 as the Blue Demons' starter.
How It Happened
The Blue Demons were aggressive from the outset, firing five of the game's first six shots, including a pair on goal.
DePaul (4-3-5) opened the account in the 25th minute. Kutch made a run down the right side and left it off for Iaccino, whose centering touch found Mullins. Mullins took a touch and fired it across his body to the far post for his first goal of the season.
Just 41 seconds later, Kutch got one of his own. Bedwell played the ball wide to Ronan Selbo, and a give-and-go eventually found Kutch, who ran to the touchline and beat the Broncos' goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
A minute after coming onto the pitch, Dionne found the back of the net through traffic in the 33rd minute for his first goal as a Blue Demon, with freshmen Jorgenson and Chase Hassfurther earning assists.
Western Michigan (4-8-4) got on the board in the waning moments of the first half when a DePaul foul in the box gave the visitors a penalty kick, which Christian Shannon converted to make it 3-1 at the intermission.
DePaul held an 11-5 edge in shots after 45 minutes, including a 5-1 margin on goal.
Just minutes into the second half, Western Michigan was reduced to 10 men when Gregory Whitfield was shown a red card, and DePaul played the rest of the stanza with a man advantage.
The Blue Demons capitalized quickly, adding insurance in the 52nd minute off the boot of Iaccino. Noeh Hernandez sent a ball upfield for Keagan Pace to settle and center, and the junior finished it with a heel flick and a one-touch dart to the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season and a 4-1 lead.
Not done yet, DePaul kept pressing and found a fifth goal in the 77th minute. Tinoco tallied the first of his career from six yards out on a cutback pass from Jorgenson, with Bedwell also credited with an assist.
