Hernandez nets seventh of season in setback
INDIANAPOLIS - DePaul men's soccer dropped a 3-1 decision to Butler at the Sellick Bowl Saturday evening. The Bulldogs got on the board in the first five minutes and held the advantage the rest of the way.
Butler (2-8-3, 2-2-2 BIG EAST) scored in the fourth minute, doubled its lead less than a minute into the second half and added a third goal in the 68th minute, as DePaul could never establish itself in the run of play and capitalize on its quality looks. DePaul (5-5-5, 2-3-2 BIG EAST) got on the board in the 80th minute when Noeh Hernandez finished the rebound of his own saved penalty kick.
The Blue Demons had a 9-6 edge in corners in a physical match that featured 40 combined fouls. Hernandez's goal was his seventh of the season and the 23rd of his career.
How It Happened
Butler earned two corners in the first four minutes and scored off the second. Brendan Cunningham headed home a Finn Moran service at the back post in the fourth minute to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Demons answered right away and earned their first corner of the match less than a minute later.
DePaul pushed deeper into the attacking third as the half went on and got looks in front of goal, but put nothing on frame through the middle stretch of the period.
One of the best chances of the half came in the 36th minute. Hernandez found space and fired, and Brooks Boersma made a diving save that sent the ball out for DePaul's third corner. Less than a minute later Luca Iaccino tested Boersma again, and he turned that one away too.
Chance Johnson kept it a one-goal game when he got his fingertips on a Cunningham attempt in the 42nd minute.
DePaul outshot Butler 7-6 in the first 45 minutes, and both sides put three shots on goal.
The Bulldogs extended the lead quickly after the break. In the 46th minute Lou-Kent Bosc headed a ball in the box down to Moran at the far post, and Moran finished to make it 2-0.
Butler added insurance in the 68th minute when Max Klein scored off a set piece to make it 3-0.
The Blue Demons broke through in the 80th minute. DePaul was awarded a penalty, and Boersma stopped Hernandez's attempt, but Hernandez buried the rebound to cut the deficit to two.
