DePaul takes one-point victory for fifth league win
CHICAGO – A driving layup by Brandon Maclin in the final seconds of Wednesday's game, lifted DePaul past Creighton, 72-71, inside Wintrust Arena. The victory marked the first for the Blue Demons over the Bluejays since 2015. DePaul was led by NJ Benson, who delivered a dominant 23-point, 10-rebound performance while shooting 10-of-11 from the field.
Benson, Maclin and Layden Blocker combined for 51 of DePaul's points on 64.5 percent shooting. Maclin finished with 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals, while Blocker contributed 11 points and four assists off the bench. As a team, DePaul recorded 20 assists on 28 made field goals.
Benson's 90.9 field goal percentage is the highest on record for DePaul, dating back to 1996-97, when attempting 10 or more field goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DePaul (13-12, 5-9 BIG EAST) jumped out to an early 8-3 lead before Creighton (13-12, 7-7 BIG EAST) quickly tied the game. The Blue Demons rattled off six consecutive made field goals over a four-minute stretch to build a 24-19 advantage. A scoring drought for DePaul allowed Creighton to reclaim its first lead since the opening possession, 28-26, and the Bluejays extended the margin to five before CJ Gunn's buzzer-beating three pulled DePaul within two at the half, 42-40.
The second half became a defensive battle, with DePaul forcing three steals in the opening minutes. The game remained closely contested throughout, as both teams remained knotted at 56. Creighton connected on back-to-back threes for its largest lead of the game at 65-59. DePaul responded immediately, with Blocker and Gunn each hitting threes to cut the deficit to one with four minutes remaining.
Down 71-70 with under a minute to play, DePaul forced a Creighton miss. Out of a timeout, Maclin drove baseline for the go-ahead layup with seven seconds left, and the Blue Demons secured the defensive stop to seal the victory.
