Hot Start Lifts Seton Hall Over DePaul Saturday Afternoon

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- An early offensive surge from Seton Hall proved too much to overcome as DePaul dropped a 96-74 decision Saturday at Walsh Gymnasium, despite a 58-point second half. The Pirates shot a blistering 65 percent from the field and 68 percent from beyond the arc on the outing to claim the season series over the Blue Demons.
Sophomore forward Natiah Nelson led DePaul with a career-high 21 points on 56 percent shooting to go with five rebounds and five assists. Devin Hagemann added 16 points for her fifth double-figure performance of the season. Gina Davorija, Meg Newman and Shakara McCline each chipped in eight points apiece.
DePaul (6-21, 3-13 BIG EAST) grabbed a season-high 20 offensive rebounds and converted those opportunities into 22 second-chance points.
Seton Hall (17-8, 11-5 BIG EAST) held a 52-38 edge in the paint and totaled seven blocked shots. Ja'Kahla Craft led four Pirates in double figures with 26 points on a perfect 11-for-11 shooting performance.
How It Happened
The Pirates opened the game on an 11-3 run, making five of their first seven shots to force an early DePaul timeout. The Blue Demons went more than five minutes without a field goal as Seton Hall pushed its lead to as many as 21 before Hagemann found Michelle Ojo for a finish inside. Hagemann added a three-pointer to trim the deficit to 13, but the Pirates scored the final basket of the quarter to take a 25-10 advantage after 10 minutes.
Seton Hall opened the second quarter in similar fashion, using a 10-0 run to build a 40-13 lead. An extended 19-3 spurt sent the Pirates into the half ahead 49-16. Seton Hall shot 66 percent in the first half, including 77 percent from three-point range.
The Blue Demons forced five turnovers in the first five minutes of the third quarter and used a 7-0 run to prompt a Seton Hall timeout, trailing 61-29. DePaul extended the run to 16-3, cutting the deficit to 25 on a Hagemann three from the left wing with 3:31 remaining in the period. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, with Nelson totaling 10 points in the frame as DePaul trailed 72-43 heading into the fourth.
DePaul outscored Seton Hall 31-24 in the final period and made its last five shots from the floor, as Hagemann and McCline combined for 16 points apiece in the quarter. The Pirates continued their hot shooting in the fourth, going 10-for-13 from the field to secure the 96-74 victory.
