Blue Demons claim victories over Cal Poly and Army

CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis delivered a dominant opening day at the second annual George Lott Classic on Saturday, securing victories over No. 62 Cal Poly and Army at XS Tennis Village. The Blue Demons will look to complete a perfect 3-0 weekend Sunday against Dartmouth.

DePaul opened the day against Cal Poly and narrowly dropped the doubles point, with all three courts decided by two games or fewer. The Mustangs claimed the early advantage, but the Blue Demons quickly flipped momentum once singles play began.

DePaul captured each of the first sets across the lineup before graduate student Sven Moser put the first point on the board at No. 6 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Pablo Torres Almeida followed shortly after on court No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 result, and Sebastian Medica added another straight-set win at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0.

Alejandro Gandini sealed the team victory on court No. 1, finishing a 6-3, 6-4 win to give the Blue Demons their fourth point. All four singles victories were completed within a 12-minute span as DePaul secured the 4-1 result.

Later in the afternoon, DePaul returned to the courts to face Army. The Blue Demons opened strongly in doubles, claiming the point behind a 6-2 win from the pairing of Sebastian Medica and Augusto Pardo Cano at No. 2, followed by a 7-5 decision from Alejandro Gandini and Pablo Torres Almeida on court No. 1.

Singles play followed a similar script to the morning match. Moser again struck first, defeating his opponent 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Gandini extended the lead with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on the top court, before Torres Almeida secured the match-clinching point with a 7-6(6), 6-3 win at No. 3.

With the pair of victories, DePaul improved to a three-match winning streak, a run last achieved on March 26, 2025.
