Men’s tennis secures third-straight BIG EAST victory

CHICAGO – After dropping the doubles point, DePaul men's tennis (8-12, 5-0 BIG EAST) endured a near four-hour battle against BIG EAST foe Marquette (4-17) Saturday, taking a 5-2 decision at XS Tennis Village to remain perfect in conference play. The victory marks the Blue Demons' third-straight win and fifth in their last six matches.

Marquette took the doubles point with a pair of wins. Sebastian Medica and Augusto Pardo Cano fell 6-3 at No. 1, while Thomas Giles and Sven Moser dropped a tiebreak at No. 2 despite an impressive comeback. The tandem erased a 1-3 deficit to level the set at 5-5, took a brief lead and pushed the tiebreak to within one before ultimately falling 7-6(4). Tobias Leitner and Alejandro Gandini provided the lone doubles bright spot, rallying at No. 3 for a 7-5 win.

Singles told a different story. Looking to rally, Medica got things started with a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 2 before Gandini delivered a commanding 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win at No. 1. At the No. 5 court, Moser's hard-fought 7-5, 7-6(3) decision extended the lead, and at No. 4, Hadziabdic locked up the match with a 7-6(8), 6-1 win. Giles closed things out with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 decision at No. 6. The lone setback in singles came at No. 3, where Leitner dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 result to make the final score 5-2 in favor of the Blue Demons.
