DePaul dominates Creighton at home Sunday
CHICAGO – On Senior Day, in front of its home crowd, DePaul men's tennis (9-12, 6-0 BIG EAST) sent off four graduating student-athletes the right way, sweeping Creighton 7-0 at XS Tennis Village. The victory secured the most conference wins in a single season in program history, the Blue Demons' first undefeated league campaign since 2022, head coach Matt Brothers' most conference wins in a regular season, and the first 7-0 sweep without dropping a set in singles since a Jan. 22, 2022 shutout of North Dakota.
In what was the longest doubles outing of the season, DePaul grinded out the point over roughly 55-minutes. Sven Moser and Thomas Giles set the tone at No. 3, rallying from a 1-3 deficit to take the set 6-3. At No. 1, Alejandro Gandini and Pablo Torres Almeida pushed Creighton to a tiebreak after an impressive comeback from 3-5 down, but ultimately fell 7-6(4). Augusto Pardo Cano and Sebastian Medica clinched the point at No. 2, recovering from 4-5 down to force a tiebreak and take it 7-6(4).
Singles was never in doubt. At No. 1, Gandini opened things up with a 5-2 win via retirement. At No. 2, Medica overcame a 4-5 deficit in the first set to take it 7-5 before closing out 6-3. No. 3 belonged to Torres Almeida, who was dominant in a 6-3, 6-3 decision, while Hadziabdic rolled at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-1 win. A 3-4 second-set deficit was no obstacle for Leitner, who took No. 4 by a 6-4, 7-5 score, while Moser closed the sweep at No. 6 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
