Graduate student claims fifth outdoor award after another school-record throw
CHICAGO – DePaul track and field's Alex Bernstein has been named BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the 11th time in his career, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
The honor marks Bernstein's fifth selection of the outdoor season after another record-setting performance in the hammer throw. Competing at the Illini Tune-Up on Friday, May 8, Bernstein won the event with a throw of 71.84m, extending his own DePaul school record by more than half a meter.
As Bernstein's marks have become more consistent over the 70m barrier, so has his presence among the BIG EAST's weekly award winners. The graduate student competed seven times during the outdoor regular season and claimed Men's Field Athlete of the Week honors in five of those opportunities.
Since breaking Carey Ryan's 2001 school record earlier this spring, Bernstein has thrown over 70m three times and reset the DePaul record on each occasion, including twice bettering his own mark. His latest performance at Illinois has him ranked firmly at No. 9 nationally in NCAA Division I and No. 6 among NCAA West Region qualifiers heading into postseason competition.
With the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships set for this weekend, the award marks Bernstein's final weekly honor opportunity before he closes his conference career in Storrs, Conn., May 14-16.
