Women's Soccer Tops Valparaiso

CHICAGO – Three first-half goals, including two in the first 10 minutes, propelled the Blue Demons over the host Crusaders, 3-1, on Friday afternoon. The victory improved DePaul’s overall record to 9-7 heading into a Sunday afternoon match at East Carolina. Christy Young’s goal in the fifth minute gave her the 37th point of her career to move into first place in the program’s seven-year history.
Young opened the match with a shot from the top of the penalty box at 4:58. For Young, it was her third goal of the season and 14th of her career. The 37 career points are now ranked first in DePaul history while her 14 goals are tied with Jeannette Croce for the top spot in Blue Demon annals. Margo Sackmaster was credited with her fourth assist on Young’s goal.
Just five minutes later, Krissy Seberhagen found the back of the net off an assist from Bren Sugarman at 9:54. Seberhagen beat Valparaiso goalkeeper Kristen Templin for her fourth goal of the season.
The final goal of the first half and last of the match for DePaul came via an unassisted score by Sackmaster at 22:47. Sackmaster’s fifth score of the year came from 20 yards out after a turnover by the Crusaders.
Lindsey Deason played the first half and made one save while Megan Pekala allowed the single Valparaiso goal in the second half. Pekala was credited with three saves and the goal came via a penalty kick in the 89th minute.
The Blue Demons continue their regular season-ending road trip with a Sunday match at East Carolina. Kickoff with the Pirates is set for Noon Eastern time.
