Haiser strikes early, Bluejays respond with three unanswered goals
OMAHA, Neb. – The DePaul women's soccer team's 2026 season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Creighton on Nov. 7. Freshman forward Katelyn Haiser opened scoring with a 10th-minute goal, but three straight goals from the Bluejays — one in the first half and two in the second half — proved too much for the Blue Demons to overcome.
DePaul finished the season with a 5-7-6 overall record and 2-5-3 BIG EAST mark.
"I'm proud of the group for having a strong start and getting on the scoreboard early, knowing what Creighton was capable of," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "I am really proud of the team for the way they put themselves in the mix to compete today."
How It Happened
Haiser opened scoring in Omaha, netting her seventh goal of the season in the 8th minute. The freshman fielded a through ball from fifth-year senior defender Jericho Frigon, beating the Bluejay defense and giving DePaul a 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays responded 30 minutes later with a chaotic sequence in the box. Creighton sent a long ball from midfield, where a header from Lorel Stringer bounced off the crossbar. The Bluejays located the rebound, and Taylor Yablonski found the back of the net for the score.
The two programs entered the half in a 1-1 deadlock. Senior goalkeeper Mason Hillery made four saves in the first 45 and the Blue Demons strung together three shots on goal.
Hillery opened the second half with her second leaping save of the match, tracking Creighton's attack to the middle of the 18-yard box and launching to the top right corner to knock the ball out of play. On the subsequent corner, however, the Bluejays found the go-ahead score, taking a 2-1 lead.
Haiser nearly knotted the score at two apiece in the 77th minute. The freshman got her chance one-on-one with goalkeeper Morgan Paly, but her shot bounced off the post, keeping the Blue Demons at a 2-1 deficit.
In the 80th minute, a red card was issued to Shayna da Silva. A minute after the red card was shown, the Bluejays scored their third goal of the match, bringing their lead to 3-1.
DePaul played undermanned for the final 10 minutes. Hillery made seven saves throughout the matchup.
"I thought it was a really solid season for our group as a team and a program as a whole," said O'Brien. "I thought the on-field and off-field team chemistry and connections were really strong, which was great. I think there's a lot to look forward to in the future because we have a really good foundation to continue to build on."
