DePaul Finishes Third at Big Blue Classic

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Frank Guzman and Carey Ryan continued their impressive starts to the 2002 outdoor season while Chris Birchall took first in the 5,000-meter run at the Big Blue Classic over the weekend. As a team, the Blue Demons finished in third with Guzman winning the shot put competition and Ryan placing first in the hammer throw.
Guzman won the shot put for the third straight weekend with a throw of 17.82 meters (58’05.75”) while Ryan was victorious with a hammer throw of 68.14m (223’07”). Ryan’s toss was a season-best for the senior and automatically qualified him for the NCAA Championships. Guzman’s distance provisionally qualified him for the NCAA meet in June. Birchall won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:28.65. It was his first win of the 2002 outdoor season.
Other top finishers for DePaul included a pair of top five finishes for Larry Inanga. He placed fifth in the 100-meter dash at 11.25 and fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.78. Larry Vonckx took third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:05.09 as did Siddiqu Muhammad in the 400-meter hurdles at 54.19. Luis Samayoa followed Birchall in the 5,000 at 14:52.01 for fourth place.
Up next for DePaul is the Kansas Relays. The Blue Demons travel to Lawrence for the three-day meet on April 18-20.
