Bernstein becomes DePaul’s first hammer throw All-American since 2010
EUGENE, Ore. – Alex Bernstein became DePaul's first hammer throw All-American in 16 years Wednesday afternoon, placing ninth in the nation with a mark of 70.71m at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships after advancing to the nine-person final at Hayward Field.
Bernstein wasted little time earning his place in the championship final, opening the competition with a throw of 68.70m before launching a 69.79m mark on his second attempt to move into the top nine. After a foul in the third round, Bernstein entered the final and improved his mark twice over the final three throws, reaching 70.71m on his fifth attempt. He closed his collegiate career with a throw of 69.22m in the sixth and final round.
The performance capped a historic outdoor season for the Penwortham, Preston, England native. Bernstein became the first Blue Demon to surpass the 70m barrier in the hammer throw, accomplishing the feat five times while resetting the school record on three occasions. He also captured his fifth career BIG EAST title this spring and concluded his career as DePaul's school-record holder with a mark of 71.84m.
Bernstein's ninth-place finish marks the best NCAA Championships performance by a DePaul hammer thrower since Brad Miller placed eighth and earned First Team All-America honors at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Bernstein becomes the program's first hammer throw All-American in 16 years, joining Miller and Carey Ryan among the event's All-Americans in school history.
