BATON ROUGE, La. - DePaul seniors Carey Ryan and Frank Guzman capped their respective collegiate careers last weekend at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Ryan earned All-American status for the third time in his career with a third place finish in the hammer throw. Guzman competed in the shot put and placed 19th. As a team, DePaul finish in a tie for 39th with six team points.
On Wednesday night, Ryan saved his best for last as he was in fourth place heading into the final throw. His final distance of 68.67 meters (225'3") was a season-best and just missed his own school record. Georgia's Panagiotis Mavraganis fouled on his final two attempts and finished with a top throw of 68.13 meters (223'6").
Andras Kaklits of Georgia won the event while SMU's Libor Charfreitag placed second. Kaklits won with a distance of 77.32 meters (253'8") while Charfreitag threw 76.99 meters (252'7").
In Ryan's final NCAA Outdoor Championships he tallied his best finish with the third place. A year ago, he placed sixth and as a sophomore, he was 15th in the country. The third-place finish equaled his third in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships earlier this year.
In the meet’s final day of competition, Guzman competed with the top shot putters in the country. He placed 19th with a distance of 17.66 meters (57’11.25”). SMU’s Janus Robberts won the event with a throw of 21.60 meters (70’10.5”).
