TAMPA, Fla. – Once again, Julianne Sitch came up big late in the match as the women’s soccer team knocked off South Florida, 1-0, on Friday evening. The freshman scored the game-winning goal with just a minute left in the match. The victory improved DePaul’s record to 5-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 in Conference USA play.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie until Sitch collected the ball at midfield and beat three South Florida defenders. Once she got close enough for a shot, the freshman fired it low and left to beat the South Florida goalkeeper.
“The team played good under difficult conditions,” said head coach John Wilson. “We were struggling early with the temperature and humidity, but hung in there and fought hard against a good South Florida team.”
The Bulls had an opportunity late in the match as they hit the crossbar. The DePaul defense and goalkeeper Lindsey Deason registered the shutout with Deason making a pair of saves.
The victory marked DePaul’s first C-USA win in two seasons and matched their program-best five-match winning streak. A year ago, the squad opened the season with five consecutive victories.
The Blue Demons move onto Southern Miss for a Sunday afternoon match. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles lost on Friday to visiting Cincinnati, 2-0.
