HATTIESBURG, Miss. – In their quest for a program-best six-match winning streak, the DePaul women’s soccer team lost at Southern Miss, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. With the defeat, the Blue Demons fell to 5-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Conference USA action.
Just 17 minutes into the match, severe lightning and rain forced a 45-minute delay. After the two squads resumed play, Southern Miss immediately scored the only goal of the match at 17:43.
The Blue Demons didn’t let the quick score bother them as they regrouped, but just couldn’t find the net. DePaul outshot the Golden Eagles, 20-11, including a 12-6 advantage in the second half.
“I’m really proud of the way the girls rebounded after the first half,” said head coach John Wilson. “They did a great job of putting together a good second 45 minutes. We did everything in the second half we could do, except score.”
The Blue Demons return to Wish Field for a pair of C-USA matches. DePaul hosts Houston on Friday and Tulane on Sunday. The Friday afternoon match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. kickoff while Sunday’s game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
