Blue Demons Take On Indiana State

CHICAGO - The DePaul women's soccer team plays the final of three consecutive road matches on Friday afternoon at Indiana State. The Blue Demons have split the first two games of the season with a 2-0 loss at Northwestern and a 5-0 victory at IPFW. Friday's game also marks the second straight contest in the state of Indiana. The Blue Demons open the home portion of the schedule next weekend against Drury and Idaho. Prior to those two matches, they will play an exhibition game against the DePaul Alumni on Sept. 8
Looking at the Blue Demons
DePaul returns 13 players and welcomes 12 newcomers to the 2002 roster... of those 13 returners, three are seniors, five are juniors and there are five sophomores... in the season-opener at Northwestern seven of the 11 starters where not on the club last season... offensively, the Blue Demons return five players that scored at least one goal... senior Christy Young is the top returning scorer for DePaul... she needs just one goal and one point to move into a tie in each category on the DePaul career lists... after opening the season with three straight road matches, the Blue Demons play four of the final six September matches at Wish Field... head coach John Wilson is in his third season in Lincoln Park.
Updating the Recordbook
In Sunday's 5-0 win at IPFW, the Blue Demons tallied their largest margin of victory in the program's seven-year history. The previous high was a 4-0 win on Oct. 27, 1999 against Loyola-Chicago. The five scores also set a single-game record for the women's soccer program.
Senior forward Christy Young inched her way closer to the top spot on the career leaders chart with two goals against the Mastodons. The Ft. Wayne, Ind., native is just a point shy of the career points leader and a goal shy in the career goals category. Jeannette Croce (1997-00) leads both categories with 35 points and 14 goals. Young, who holds the top spot with eight assists, has totaled 34 points and 13 goals.
Looking at the Sycamores
Indiana State enters the match looking for their first win of the season... they have dropped games at Southeast Missouri (2-0), against Murray State (3-2, OT) and at Ball State (1-0)... Ashlie Voerg and Rachel Gerhardt have scored the two Sycamore goals this season... a year ago, Indiana State was 6-11-2 and return nine starters in 2002... the program is just in its third year of existence... head coach Vernon Croft is in his third season... The series: Friday marks the second meeting between the Blue Demons and Sycamores... DePaul won, 3-0, in the season opener for both teams.
Last Time Out - DePaul 5, IPFW 0
Four players scored five goals for DePaul as they beat IPFW, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon. Christy Young scored twice while goalkeeper Erica Keppel earned the shutout in her first game for the Blue Demons. The victory evened DePaul's record at 1-1.
DePaul started quickly as they scored three goals in the first 20 minutes. Julianne Sitch found Krissy Seberhagen in the 15th minute for the game's first goal. Seberhagen was followed by two scores from Young at 17:41 and 19:14.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Margo Sackmaster beat IPFW keeper Rachel Poor to make the score 4-0. The score remained there until Sitch scored the final goal of the day at 76:17.
For the match, the Blue Demons outshot the Mastodons, 18-11, including a 12-5 advantage in the first half. Keppel made four saves in her 90 minutes of play.
