CHICAGO – This weekend, the entire DePaul track and field team will compete after splitting up the squad for the last two weeks. The Blue Demons will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the Central Collegiate Conference Championships. The 78th edition this weekend will take place at Kanley Track and Field Complex on the campus of Western Michigan University.
With just this weekend action and the Dr. Keeler Invitational next weekend, DePaul is looking to tune up for the 2003 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The league meet will be May 15-17 at Charlotte.
A Look Back at the Penn Relays
Jarrod Jahnke placed eighth in the collegiate hammer throw on Saturday to complete all of the action for the DePaul contingent at the 109th Penn Relays. On Thursday, Megan Greeley was fourth in the javelin and Erin Moffett finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run.
Jahnke’s distance of 55.71 meters put him eighth out of 26 student-athletes in the collegiate competition. Saturday’s mark was a season-best for the senior.
On Thursday, Greeley’s season-best distance of 44.84 meters just missed her own school record of 44.91 meters set in 2001. The senior finished fourth out of 29 competitors.
Moffett provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with a time of 35:00.47 in the women’s 10,000-meter run. She placed fifth out of 29 runners. Moffett holds DePaul’s school record in the event with a time of 34:29.41 set last season.
On the men’s side, Luis Samayoa competed in the men’s 10,000-meter run Thursday night. He finished 28th with a time of 31:23.58. Former DePaul runner and current assistant coach Chris Birchall ran the 10,000 meters in the Olympic Development division. He took third place with a time of 29:27.94.
Recapping the Boilermaker Invitational
Sprinter Larry Inanga and thrower Susan Stoffel led the DePaul track and field teams with a pair of top five finishes at Purdue’s Boilermaker Invitational this weekend. Inanga won the 100 and 200-meter dashes while Stoffel placed third in the hammer throw and fifth in the discus throw.
In the 100-meter dash Inanga reeled off a winning time of 10.88 seconds. That is the second-best time by a DePaul sprinter this season. He came back and improved his own season-best time with a 21.58 first-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Cornelius Sams finished fifth in the 200 with a time of 22.02.
Stoffel was third in the hammer throw with a season-best distance of 48.13 meters. She followed that performance with a toss of 40.28 meters in the discus to place fifth. The discus distanced was also the top mark this season.
Rashard Deleston took third in the long jump while Tom Kacprzynski placed fourth in the 400-meter dash. Deleston registered a personal-best distance of 6.89 meters while Kacprzynski finished in 50.01. The men’s 1500-meter run had a DePaul flavor as two Blue Demons finished in the top five. Donnie Warner edged out teammate Rick Britton for fourth place. Warner’s time of 3:58.52 put him in fourth while Britton was fifth in 3:58.64.
The women’s 4x100-meter relay took second and Diana Runnels notched a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash. Runnels’ time of 25.17 bettered her own season-best mark of 25.27.
