Recapping the Conference USA Championships
The DePaul women’s track and field team finished in a tie for eighth place at the 2002 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships while the men’s team was 10th. Jarrod Jahnke won the hammer throw competition while Leah Rygh placed in the top four in two events.
Rygh posted a pair of outstanding performances in the women’s 800 and 1500-meter runs. In both events, she broke school records while qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional in the 1500. In the 800 she took third place at 2:13.37 while placing fourth in the 1500 with a time of 4:30.63.
Erin Moffett was among the meet’s top scorers as she placed in three events. She tallied a second-place finish in the steeplechase while taking fifth in the 5000 and 10,000-meter races. Megan Greeley took second in the javelin with a toss of 46.26 meters. In each of her four years, she placed in the top five at the league’s outdoor championship meet.
Jahnke kept DePaul’s reign in the hammer throw in tact with winning distance of 56.01 meters. For the last four years, a DePaul thrower has won the hammer throw competition at the C-USA Championships. Former All-American and current assistant coach Carey Ryan won the event in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Larry Inanga took fifth place in the 400-meter dash while qualifying for the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Updating the Recordbook
On nine occasions this season, the DePaul outdoor track and field recordbook needed an update. Four times this season, Leah Rygh has set the women’s 1500-meter run record while Megan Greeley broke her own javelin record twice this season.
At the C-USA Championships, the women’s team set six new program marks at the Central Collegiate Conference Championships. Rygh tallied school records in the 800 and 1500-meter events two weeks ago while Diana Runnels broke her own mark set in 2001 in the 400-meter dash. Throwers Megan Greeley and Susan Stoffel registered new marks in the javelin and hammer events while the team of Marissa Petersen, Dee Moore, Runnels and Shelley Knight set a new 4x400-meter relay record.
The lone record set this season that wasn’t at the C-USA meet was in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Erin Moffett’s time of 10:33.05 at the Lee Calhoun Invitational bettered her own mark set last year.
On the men’s side, Will Lazicki broke the 19-year-old 800-meter run record at the Dr. Keeler Invitational with a time of 1:50.27. At the Kansas Relays, Kai Murray, Lazicki, Ben Cooke and Luis Samayoa recorded a new school mark of 7:39.83 in the 4x880-yard relay.
