CHICAGO – Patrick Ferrell’s “golden goal” with less than three minutes left in the first overtime period put the Blue Demons over visiting Marquette, 2-1, on Wednesday at Wish Field. The win snapped a nine-match winless streak for the Blue Demons and gave them their first victory in 24 tries against the Golden Eagles.
Following a scoreless first half, Matt Blouin put Marquette (3-9-1, 0-6-1 C-USA) ahead with his fourth goal of the season. Blouin knocked in a rebound off a shot by Mike Carlson at 78:54 to give the Golden Eagles the advantage.
With time winding down, Kurt Albrecht threaded a nice pass through the Marquette defense to find a streaking John Kornfeld. Kornfeld beat a pair of defenders and fired a shot to the lower right corner at 87:24 to tie the match at 1-1.
As they’ve done seven other times this season, DePaul (3-11-3, 1-5-1 C-USA) played extra soccer. However, Ferrell’s first career goal at 96:45 gave the Blue Demons their first overtime victory of the season.
DePaul keeper Brian Allen finished the match with six saves while his counterpart Andy Kroll totaled four stops. Kroll thwarted a potential game-winner early in the overtime period when he stopped a point-blank shot by Kevin Riemer.
The win keeps the Blue Demons in the hunt for the C-USA Tournament. DePaul travels to Northern Illinois next Wednesday for their final non-conference match before closing the regular season with C-USA games at Charlotte and UAB.
