CHICAGO – Goals by both teams in the first half saw DePaul and Indiana play to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field. Neither team was able to find the net in the second half and two overtime periods.
Missy Vierling put Indiana (8-6-3) on the board first when she connected at 17:04. Kristin Radcliffe started the action with a corner kick that found Kristen Smijewski. Smijewski’s header went over to Vierling where she put it past DePaul keeper Lindsey Deason.
DePaul came back nearly 20 minutes later off a nice combination from Lindsey Deason to Margo Sackmaster to Kelly Lord. Following an Indiana foul near midfield, Deason came out of goal to take the free kick. Her long drive found Margo Sackmaster at the endline who headed the ball in front of the net where Lord was waiting to tie the match. Lord’s fifth goal of the season tied the match at 35:55.
In the second half, Vierling nearly scored again but her header went off the crossbar and the DePaul defense was able to clear it. In an even-played match, both teams took 16 shots with the Hoosiers attempting 11 corner kicks compared to nine for the Blue Demons.
In addition to her assist, Deason finished the match with eight saves. Her counterpart, Lauren Fabbro, totaled four stops in the match.
DePaul (9-7-2) wraps up the regular season with a Friday night match at UAB. Kickoff in Birmingham is set for 7 p.m.
