BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Needing a win to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament, the DePaul women’s soccer team dropped a 7-2 decision at UAB on Friday night. The Blue Demons hopes are still alive, but chances of DePaul playing in next week’s league tournament ride on the results of the TCU-Louisville and Tulane-Southern Miss matches on Saturday.
In a span of 16 seconds early in the first half, the score stood at 1-1. Jill Porto opened the scoring for UAB at 6:42 before DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason tallied her first goal of the season at 6:56. Deason, who entered the match with two career goals while playing as a forward, lined up a free kick at midfield and knocked it to the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1.
From that point, the match went the Blazers way as they totaled three more scores to take a 4-1 halftime lead. Liz Bosscher scored twice at 13:29 and 25:22 before Jenny Rynders closed the half with a goal at 42:10.
Julianne Sitch found the net at 68:34 for her ninth goal of the season when she stole the ball from a UAB defender and beat the keeper to make the score, 4-2.
UAB (12-5-1, 8-2-0 C-USA) immediately answered on Bosscher’s third goal of the night at 69:27. Jennifer Williams and Daelyn Richards capped the scoring with goals in the 72nd and 88th minutes, respectively.
The seven goals allowed by DePaul (9-8-2, 4-5-1 C-USA) were the most goals allowed since a 7-0 loss at Marquette that ended the 2000 season.
DePaul will watch the scoreboards on Saturday as they stand in eighth place after Friday’s action. The Blue Demons are 4-5-1 in league play with nine points while TCU is ninth at 4-5-0 (8 pts.) and Tulane is 3-5-1 (7 pts.). Each team earns two points for a win and one point for a tie in the C-USA standings. The top eight teams advance to next week's C-USA Tournament in St. Louis, Mo.
