CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After erasing a 2-0 deficit with three straight goals, the DePaul women’s soccer team allowed a late score by Charlotte and played to a 3-3 tie in double overtime on Sunday afternoon. Kelly DeBaene and Lea Hill both finished the day with a goal and an assist.
An penalty kick and a goal off a rebound put Charlotte up 2-0 just 16 minutes into the match. Lindsey Beam scored the first of her two goals on a penalty kick at 1:28 before Jill Leeder gathered a rebound off DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason and finished the play at 16:12.
DePaul (5-6-1, 1-3-1 C-USA) didn’t back down and tied the match with two goals in the final 15 minutes of the second half. DeBaene and Hill combined to find Erin Walter who scored past Charlotte keeper Lauren Dansby at 31:10.
With the clock ticking down to halftime, Hill broke free from a pair of Charlotte defenders and tied the match at 2-2. Hill’s eight goal of the season tied the game at 44:53.
In the second half, the Blue Demons managed just two shots with both coming on one play. Emily Serruto knocked a shot off the post where DeBaene sent it to the back of the net to give the DePaul the lead at 75:28.
The Blue Demons held the lead for 10 minutes, but gave in when Beam scored her second goal at 86:46. Following a DePaul foul, Beam lined up and scored off the indirect free kick from just outside the left side of the penalty box.
Neither team was able to score in the two overtime periods with each managing a shot in the first and DePaul got off a shot in the second extra frame. In the match, Charlotte (1-9-1, 1-1-1 C-USA) outshot the Blue Demons, 15-11.
DePaul returns to Wish Field next weekend to open a six-match homestand. The Blue Demons host Louisville on Friday afternoon before playing Cincinnati on Sunday.
