CHICAGO – Julianne Sitch’s golden goal with a minute left in the second overtime period put the Blue Demons over Louisville, 2-1, on a soggy Friday afternoon at Wish Field. With the win, DePaul snaps a three-match losing streak and gives the visiting Cardinals their first Conference USA defeat.
DePaul (6-6-1, 2-3-1 C-USA) didn’t waste any time getting on the board as Stefanie Foley found Jennifer Dyer in the first minute of the match. Kelly Lord started the play at midfield and fed the ball to Foley on the right sideline. Foley dribbled down the sideline and crossed the ball into the box where Dyer headed it in off a bounce just 37 seconds into the match.
Louisville (8-3-1, 3-1-1 C-USA) kept the pressure on during the rest of the first half and finally broke through when Jamie Craft scored past DePaul’s Lindsey Deason. Craft took a pass from Mandy Rost and dribbled past two Blue Demon defenders and beat a closing Deason at 34:36 to knot the score at 1-1. For Craft, it was her league-leading 11th goal of the season.
Neither team was able to find the net in the second half and through the first overtime period. Both teams had chances, but Deason and Lousiville’s Meredith Miller were there each time. Deason finished the match with six saves while Miller made four stops.
With the clock winding down in the second overtime period, Erin Walter lofted a cross into the top of the penalty box from the left sideline. Sitch outjumped a Louisville defender and her arcing header was just out of the reach of Miller for the game-winner at 108:59. For Sitch, it was her seventh goal of the season and first since Sept. 19 against Marquette.
The Blue Demons wrap-up the C-USA weekend with a Sunday afternoon match against Cincinnati. Kickoff at Wish Field is set for 1 p.m. The Bearcats play at Marquette on Friday night.
