Blue Demons Win Chicagoland Championships

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The DePaul women's track and field team won the annual Chicagoland Championships this weekend at North Central College. The Blue Demons' 169 points outscored second-place Carthage College with 126 points. Marlene Key and Leah Rygh won two events apiece to lead DePaul in the three-day meet.
Key posted victories in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter events. On Friday, Key won the 10,000-meter run in a time of 36:45.38. She came back on Saturday and won the 5,000-meter run with a mark of 18:03.66.
Rygh won the 800-meter run in 2:14.92 and was followed by teammate Shelley Knight in fourth place with a mark of 2:19.56. In the 1500-meter run, Rygh won with a time of 4:39.11. Erin and Carrie Moffett took third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run. Erin Moffett finished third in 4:44.92 with her sister Carrie just behind in fourth at 4:47.63.
Jeana LeRoy and Tammy Burris led the field events. Burris won the discus, took second in the shot put and finished fifth in the hammer throw. Her distance of 43.09 meters led the field in the discus while the mark of 12.72 meters in the shot put was second to LeRoy. LeRoy took first place in the shot put with a winning distance of 12.90 meters.
DePaul took fifth, sixth and seventh places in the hammer throw. Burris led the way in fifth place with a throw of 41.16 meters and was followed by LeRoy in sixth at 41.14 meters and Jamie Holifield in seventh at 40.94 meters.
Diana Runnels won the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.79 and was followed by Mary Hodges in fifth place at 1:00.38. DaShara Wells posted a pair of third-place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Her distance in the long jump of 5.25 meters put her in third as did the distance of 10.59 meters in the triple jump.
Dee Moore earned a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.37 and a fourth place in the 200-meter dash at 25.46. In the 400-meter hurdles, Lauren Henn's time of 1:08.27 put her in second place while Trina Knight finished fourth with a time of 1:09.14.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Marissa Petersen, Hodges, Runnels and Trina Knight won with a time of 3:58.02. Moore, Petersen, Hodges and Runnels combined for a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay at 47.80.
The Blue Demons won the team title with 169 points followed by Carthage College in second place with 126 and Lewis in third with 124 points. Up next for DePaul is next weekend's Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.
