LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the fifth straight year, a DePaul thrower won the men's hammer throw title at the Conference USA Championships. Jarrod Jahnke defended his 2002 title with a season-best distance of 59.59 meters (195'2"). His first-place finish marks the fifth consecutive year a Blue Demon has won the event following Carey Ryan's three-year title run.
Jahnke outdistanced runner-up Joe Swiderski of Louisville who finished with a mark of 52.67 meters (172'10"). Jahnke's distance improved his qualifying position for the NCAA Regional meet at the end of May.
With a majority of the first day's action consisting of the heptathlon and decathlon, the 10,000-meter run was the only other individual event on Thursday. The top finisher for DePaul was Anthony Becknek in eighth place. Becknek finished in a personal season-best time of 32:28.33. Brent Des Roches of Marquette won the event in 30:58.01.
The Blue Demons stand in third place through two events with 11 team points. Louisville leads after the first day of action with 27 points while Marquette is in second with 12 points.
