CHICAGO – Two second half goals in less than three minutes was all it took on Wednesday afternoon as the men’s soccer team knocked off Loyola, 2-0, in the season opener for both clubs. Alec Kulinczenko scored his first career goal and Patrick Vyncke added another to lead the Blue Demons.
Both teams played to a stalemate in the first 45 minutes as they combined for just four shots. The best scoring opportunity for both teams came 15 minutes into the match as a Vyncke header went off the crossbar.
In the second half, the Blue Demons found the back of the net as Kulinczenko knocked in a rebound. Julian Chill started the play with a free kick along the right sideline. His serve went into the box on the left side of the goal where John Partyka made an attempt to score. His shot was deflected and Kulinczenko was there for the eventual game-winner at 63:36.
At 67:11, it was Vyncke’s turn as Edwin Arreola set up the goal with a cross from the right side of the penalty box. Vyncke was there and sent in the header past Loyola goalkeeper Sean Bond.
The DePaul defense was stifling as they held the Ramblers to just three shots. Blue Demon goalkeeper Brian Allen tallied a save while picking up his first career shutout. Dating back to last season, in each of DePaul's last nine victories, all nine have been shutouts.
The Blue Demons play again on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field against the visiting Valparaiso Crusaders. Kickoff in Lincoln Park is set for 4 p.m. The match is part of a doubleheader as the DePaul women take on Liberty at 1 p.m.
