ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Life on the road was tough again on the DePaul women’s soccer team as they lost, 3-0, at Saint Louis on Sunday. The loss also marked the first time this season that the Blue Demons were held scoreless.
Saint Louis’ Jamie Perry scored the first of the three Billiken goals in the 19th minute. Following a DePaul foul, Courtney Hulcer lofted a pass into the box from 40 yards out. After it bounced once in the box, Perry’s flick header went just over the right shoulder of Deason for the eventual game-winning goal.
Saint Louis (5-3-1, 1-0-0 C-USA) put the match away with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Cassi Winchell dribbled around two DePaul defenders and beat Deason at the near post at 47:37 followed by a Dee Gumpel goal at 60:51. Gumpel’s goal came via a pass from Winchell and she converted it with a shot past a diving Deason.
DePaul (5-5-0, 1-2-0 C-USA) put together a pair of opportunities over a five-minute span, but came up empty each time. Julianne Sitch got behind the Billiken defense in the 50th minute, but goalkeeper Amanda Martin was there to make the save. She then stopped Kelly Lord at the post off a DePaul corner kick.
Deason was busy throughout the afternoon as she totaled 10 saves. The Billikens outshot the Blue Demons, 18-7, including a 10-1 margin in the first half.
DePaul goes on the road again next weekend for a pair of C-USA matches in North Carolina. The Blue Demons take on East Carolina on Friday and Charlotte next Sunday. Following the road trip, the club returns to Wish Field for six consecutive home games before playing the regular-season finale at UAB on Oct. 29.
