CHICAGO – After holding a 1-0 lead for 87 minutes, the women’s soccer team allowed a match-tying goal and the game-winner in a 2-1 overtime loss to visiting Western Michigan. Julianne Sitch’s first goal of the season gave DePaul a 1-0 lead before the Broncos broke through late in the second half.
Jennifer Heil set up the Blue Demon goal on a free kick from the left sideline. She served the ball into the box from 40 yards out. Sitch gathered the ball and fired it off the crossbar and the momentum carried it into the goal at 18:59.
Both teams traded shots throughout the remainder of the first half with Western Michigan’s Sara Cultra having the best opportunity on a header that was stopped by DePaul keeper Lindsey Deason.
The stalemate continued into the second half until the Broncos started to put more pressure on the Blue Demon defense. Finally, in the 88th minute on a corner kick, Chelsea McNally tied the match off a header from Mandi Marsh.
Overtime started the same way the second half ended as neither team was able to generate much offense. With just under two minutes left, the Broncos thought they had won the match, but were thwarted by the DePaul defense.
Following a shot off the crossbar, the Blue Demon defense attempted to clear the ball. However, Western Michigan’s Stacy Rogers came up with the ball and fired it into the net at 97:09 for the overtime victory.
Deason finished the match with five saves as the Blue Demons were outshot, 13-9.
The Blue Demons look to get back on track Sunday afternoon as they take on the Liberty Flames. Kickoff at Wish Field is set for 1 p.m. The match is the first of a doubleheader as the men’s team takes on Valparaiso at 4 p.m.
