Track & Field To Central Collegiate Championships

CHICAGO – The DePaul track and field teams will make their way to the Central Collegiate Championship in Champaign, Illinois, this Saturday.  Events will take place at the Illinois Track and Field Stadium.

The University of Illinois will host 15 teams at the all day event beginning at 9:00 a.m. 

The field of team includes: Chicago State, Grand Valley State, Illinois State, Loyola, Marquette, Missouri Baptist, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Southern Illinois - Carbondale, Southern Illinois - Edwardsville, University of Illinois, University of Indianapolis, Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and Western Illinois.

All but four members of the Blue Demon squad are coming off of a weekend of rest, as Kayla Burks, Gavin Kennedy, Richard Byrne, and Anthony Becknek were the only student-athletes who traveled to Walnut, California.

The group participated in the distinguished Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio Community College.  Athletes competed from across the country and around the world in divisions that ranged from university and unattached participants to high school level student-athletes.

Burks notched a second place finish in the high jump, covering a height of 1.67m (5’05.75”).

All three DePaul men recorded personal bests in their respective events.  Kennedy and Byrne ran the 1500 meter race and Becknek took on the 3000 meter steeplechase.

Kennedy slid into eighth place with a time of 3:49.80 and Byrne followed close behind in 3:51.35 for the 14^th spot.

Beckek scored a 14^th place finish as well, recording his new best in 9:14.56.

Following the Central Collegiate Championships, the Blue Demons intend to spread all over the map, sending representatives to three various locations.  The 111^th Penn Relays will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the 96^th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, over April 28-30.  Locally, the North Central Invite is held on April 29 in Naperville, Illinois.
