#15 Northwestern 2, #25 DePaul 1
Northwestern posted their first run of the ballgame in the first inning on an Erin Mobley home run.
In the second inning, DePaul senior third baseman, Jenny Doezie answered Mobley’s homer with one of her own to right field. Doezie’s home run was her third of the season.
The Blue Demons loaded the bases in the third inning, but were unable to plate any runners. With two outs, sophomore Linda Secka connected on a hard-hit grounder to the left side, but it was knocked down by the Wildcat third baseman to get Northwestern out of the inning.
The Wildcats posted the winning run in the fourth inning on Kristen Amegin’s RBI single up the middle.
Northwestern looked to add more runs in the bottom of the sixth but heads up Blue Demon defense halted the Wildcat charge. The next Wildcat batters dribbled a ball to the pitchers mound where Huitink tossed it back to Polensky, who was blocking the plate and got the runner out. The final batter of the inning grounded out to the DePaul short stop, Sara Bandauski.
Elieen Canney (18-5) recorded the win for the Wildcats; she gave up six hits but struck out 10 Blue Demon batters.
DePaul junior, Leslie Scott (0-1) registered the loss for DePaul. The junior gave up three-hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. Huitink closed out the game for the Blue Demons.
The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled prior to the start of first game.
