CHICAGO - This is the ninth in a series that takes an inside look at the future of DePaul athletics in the BIG EAST Conference. The BIG EAST, headquartered in Providence, R.I., celebrated its 25th anniversary during the 2003-04 season and moved forward in 2004-05 with the addition of five new members poised to join the league this summer.
On July 1, DePaul University joins the University of Cincinnati, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida as new members of the BIG EAST Conference. The league membership in 2005-06 includes the five new members joining the University of Connecticut, Georgetown University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh, Providence College, Rutgers University, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University, Syracuse University, Villanova University and the University of West Virginia.
A Preview of BIG EAST Women’s Track and Field
The BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships are held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Villanova won the inaugural women’s championship in 1983 and leads the league with 11 indoor titles.
The Pittsburgh women’s squad captured the team title at the 2005 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships with 161.50 points. The Panthers also claimed the team title in 1989 and 1999. At the NCAA Indoor Championship, the BIG EAST Conference was represented by athletes from Pittsburgh, Villanova, Notre Dame, Georgetown and Rutgers.
On the outdoor side of track and field, Villanova also holds the most titles with eight team crowns. In 2005, the Pittsburgh women claimed the league championship with a near-record 176 points. Villanova also holds the distinction of winning the first league title in 1983. Pittsburgh’s 176 points just missed the team record of 177 points set by Villanova in 1984. Notre Dame was the runner-up with 113.50 team points.
