CHICAGO - This is the eighth in a series that takes an inside look at the future of DePaul athletics in the BIG EAST Conference. The BIG EAST, headquartered in Providence, R.I., celebrated its 25th anniversary during the 2003-04 season and moved forward in 2004-05 with the addition of five new members poised to join the league this summer.
On July 1, DePaul University joins the University of Cincinnati, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida as new members of the BIG EAST Conference. The league membership in 2005-06 includes the five new members joining the University of Connecticut, Georgetown University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pittsburgh, Providence College, Rutgers University, St. John’s University, Seton Hall University, Syracuse University, Villanova University and the University of West Virginia.
A Preview of BIG EAST Men’s Track and Field
The BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships were held for the 26th year at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. Connecticut captured the first men’s crown in 1980, while Georgetown has won the most men’s championships with 11, winning seven of eight between 1994-2001.
The Notre Dame men’s squad captured the team title at the 2005 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships. With 182 points, the Irish claimed their second men’s title in three years. Notre Dame also won the men’s team title in 2003. At the NCAA Indoor Championship, the BIG EAST Conference was represented by Notre Dame, Georgetown and Pittsburgh.
The BIG EAST sponsored an outdoor track and field championship for the 26th time in 2005. St. John’s captured the first men’s outdoor crown in 1980, while Georgetown leads the league with 11 team championships, including six of the last 10. The Notre Dame men collected a second straight title in 2004.
The Rutgers men’s team won the BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 8, held at the Bauer Track & Field Complex on the campus of Rutgers University. On the men’s side, with 192 points, Rutgers earned its first men’s title and matched a meet record for points set by Connecticut in 2002.
