Men's Basketball Loses at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. Marquette’s Dan Fitzgerald scored a career-high 18 points while shooting 6-for-7 from 3pt. field goal range in helping the Golden Eagles to a 62-47 win over cold-shooting DePaul on Wednesday at the Bradley Center.
The loss was the Blue Demons’ fifth straight and dropped DePaul to 8-10 overall and 1-6 in BIG EAST Conference play while Marquette improved to 15-5 and 5-2.
Draelon Burns, a Milwaukee native returning to his hometown, led the Blue Demons with 16 points and was the only DePaul player to reach double figures. The Blue Demons’ leading scorer Sammy Mejia injured an ankle late in the first half and didn’t return to the contest. Marlon Brumfield grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for DePaul.
DePaul shot just .377 (20-53) from the field and was 2-16 (.125) from 3pt. range in the game.
The contest was tight for the early going of the first period and was tied at 18 with 7:02 to play when Fitzgerald went on a personal 9-2 run with three 3pt. field goals over the next three minutes to give Marquette a 29-20 lead. After a Marcus Heard basket, Fitzgerald canned another trey helping send the Golden Eagles to a 36-24 halftime advantage.
Without Mejia, DePaul got as close as eight at 38-30 with 14:36 to play but that would be it. Marquette pushed the lead to as much as 22 with 4:54 to play and then cruised home for the win. Marquette also got 12 points from Dominic James and 11 from Jerel McNeal.
DePaul will be in action again on Tuesday when Georgetown comes to the Allstate Arena for a 7:30 p.m. game that will be televised by ESPN Classic.
